I think it depends on which days CHristmas actually falls, and New Years Day as well, since it's a holiday too, and how the weekends work out. You probably have the same number of actual school days off, it just seems like more, or less, depending on where the weekends fall. Some years you may have to go back on a Wednesday, for example, but then you're only back for part of the week.

At any rate, in order for students to pass the grade, you have to hava a certain number of days in class... So if you have more time at the winter break, that means extra school days somewhere else.

No the schools should not close for 2 weeks. Kids have more than enough days off from school. Teachers meetings, Grading day, Parent teacher meetings. etc. The day before Christmas and the day after Christmas should be enough.

Yes, but in my school district the teachers union got a new contract that lengthens our school year... that means less time for vacation. We get out the day before Christmas Eve and like a day after New Years Day. Plus, we get out late June for the school year and they might make that later.

Okay, whoever said Hanukkah is in January is an idiot. Hanukkah is BEFORE Christmas, and always will be.
Yes, you should get 2 weeks, but its because Christmas is on Monday this year.
