The correct treatment for PCOS is low carb diet, exercise, and using an insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin (1500-2550mg per day).

The underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance. Many women "pass" the blood test for this, but still respond positively from metformin. Birth control pills are often prescribed to treat PCOS, but it is not a good idea. The pill masks the symptoms of PCOS while at the same time aggrivating them. So, when you go off the pill..your symptoms are much worse. A few important things to know about PCOS;

1. You need to be on a high enough dose before you will see any improvement in your symptoms. Many doctors are hesitant to up a dose past 1500mg. However, push for a higher dose if you see no improvement after a few months.

2. It can take a few months on the correct dose before you notice any significant improvement.

3. See a reprouctive endocrinologist. They are the most knowledgeable about PCOS. They can also help with any fertility treatments if that is something you need and/or want to do.

I highly recommend visiting a message board for women with PCOS. They are very helpful. There is a great one at www.ivillage.com
