Well if you're willing to clean (even though the landlord should do it), ask for some kind of discount for cleaning up their property. Next, call a garbage or junk hauling service and schedule them. Toss everything out on the curb for them. Once the junk is gone you can work on sanitizing, deodorizing and have the carpets cleaned. Wipe all the walls down. I've cleaned my rental units and repainted within about 4 days when tenants left crap for me to deal with.

Funny/scary story: While cleaning after a tenant left, I found a, um, "ring" that goes around a guy's hoo-ha, if you know what I mean. THAT squicked me out.

Dancing's right: If it's a rental, it should be cleaned before it is rented out.

It doesn't always happen though. In fact, my first little apartment had barely had a nod made toward cleaning. What I did was take a garbage bag and throw out all the stuff that had been abandoned that was plainly worthless. Then I pulled on some rubber gloves, sprayed the inside of the oven with Off, then got a bucket of hot sudsy Lysol and started scrubbing everything that was scrubbable. By then, the oven was ready to be wiped out. So I went through a pile of rags doing that. After that, I got a roll of paper towels and a bottle of windex to clean the glass. Then, of course, I made some pretty extensive use of a bathroom cleaner.

After all that, the place was safe to live in. And I scrubbed it down again when I moved on.

If it is a rental it should be cleaned by the landlord BEFORE you accept it. If anything is broken make sure you log it on the lease before signing it.

If the landlord is going to lower your rent for cleaning it yourself (still log the busted items) I suggest you pick up a steamer to clean the nastiness. It's basically a steam gun that shoots hot steam on dirty stuff and you just wipe it away.

For the bathroom use "The Works" bathroom cleaner.

For the oven get some Easy Off Fume Free and spray the heck out of it the night before you clean it. Take all the burner trays off and spray them and shove them in to soak too.

As far as the carpet goes you should hire a pro to clean that. Make sure you bring all reciepts to the landlord for payment ( you may want to work out some sort of contract). You don't want to get screwed out of your cash!

Good luck! And wear latex gloves! ICK!

I cleaned the nastiest apartment ever. The smell knocked you over when you walked in and it was from food and I dont know what left spilled in the freezer and fridge. I scraped it all out onto the floor and used 2 bottles of bleach and scrubbed till I lost my fingerprints. Leave all doors and windows open and use anything that smells good on the carpets and floors and you just have to wait out the smell.

Try this cloth. You have to buy in packages of 5 but they are only like $3 bucks a piece. I have ordered them and use them on everything, especially windows. They are made out of tiny fibers that work like razor blades. They are guaranteed not to scratch and all you do is rinse the cloth under water, wring it out and wipe ANY surface with no streaks or scratch. Use em over and over. I have not thrown one away yet!
I even waxed my car with it! I am sold on this ...I encourage you to try it out.

I would suggest that you hire a steam cleaner for the floors and kitchen. Good luck
