first and foremost: most waitresses aren't working for wages but for tips...do you ever want to do anything that might limit the amount of money you could possibly make? No matter how little?
People are usually cranky for a reason, even if it's a habit for them! And who better to take it out on (sad but true) than someone that is serving them?
The trick for you is to not take it personally. That can be very hard, especially when you are personally addressed with their bad moods!
It's really not kissing their butt (feels like it) it's customer service.
I used to have an absolutly cantankerous old man come in...almost every day. Most of the girls refused to wait on him.
He smelled kinda funky, and swore like a sailor about everything from the menu to the service to the weather.
Since i was new, guess who got to wait on him?
The first day, he really got to me...so badly I took the encounter home with me....That night I decided to think of him as my grandpa....someone I had to be nice to, even though it took extra patience.
So the next day, with my new attitude all polished up, when he swore and told me not to bring so much coffee, I started giggling.
"What the hell are you laughing about?"
"Oh nothing, you just remind me so much of my grandpa. I'll get your order right in so you don't have that to grumble about."
then I shook my head, and giggled some more.
When I brought his order and said I hoped he enjoyed it, he said I had probably spit in it. I refilled his coffee, and told him that's what my gramps would have said....
When I came to pick up his dishes (and refill coffee), he asked if my grampa lived around here....
"No, he's been dead 30 years...never met the man"
At which point, he started laughing so hard, I worried he was going to have a heart attack...
He left...no tip.
The next time I saw him, he slapped 5 bucks on the table when I walked up, said, "Here, Kid, take it now, I'll probably hate you again before I leave. You remind me of my granddaughter. She's dead too."
Do you see what I'm saying? You really never know what's going on with "the public".
There's also the "rule of seven"....if service is good, one person will talk about it....If service is bad, 7 people will.
Do well, and get tips!

NEVER ignore your customers, that will make them even MORE cranky.
Just smile and kiss their butt...be the NICEST you can possibly be. fake your smile if you must.
you don't want them to go and complain to your manager that your being a horrible waitress.

We complain and complain about the mean customers... and they're always the regulars. But, when they walk in, we put on a smile and put up with their crap. What can I say? They give us stuff to talk about over and over again until the next time they come in.

Suck it in, and paint the prettiest smile on your face, be polite, and try to remedy their problem.
Then go in the dishroom and swear your buns off!
You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
