I have a digital camera, is it possible to just take a picture of my characters every time i move them, or do i have to use a different camera? Also, how do you start one of these films?

Have what ever story line done before you begin.
first, set up your stage. Then, put your camera where ever it will be, on a little stand that can rotate, and not move. Every time you move the camera to a different location, make sure that your previous one has been marked so that you know where you were, b/c it will look very funny when your clay person is doing some sort of a move, and suddenly he's a lot closer to the camera w/ out a reason. So try to finish "Bob's" movement to the end before you move on.
Every time Bob moves, you take a snapshot. The smaller the movement, the smoother the end result.
Then you edit everythign together and you have our movie.

It is easily done, but don't expect the kind of results you see on TV just using a digital camera. Those animations are highly edited using sophisticated software that does eases in and outs etc.

Claymation is used because it gives the most realistic results. I use a program called 3D Studio Max. It's not as accurate as Claymation in my opinion. I have a small animation on youtube here,

It is something I did several years but shows a little of what you can do with the program. You can download a trial version at their website.

I used modeling clay with my students and took a series of still digital images. I loaded them into video editing software and made each image a few frames long, set it to music and had something cute.
view some stop motion examples here:

Use plasticine instead, as it tolerates the heat better. Unless you have a single frame advance function, you may not be able to do this
