Embers are the dying ashes of a fire, I say dying because they still glow reddish and if you blow on them they get hot enough to ignite other materials. So rekindling them is when you blow on them to heat them up enough to re-start a fire.

Rekindling the embers is a metaphor for re-starting a relationship.

Embers are the hot glowing coals left in a fire that has died down... rekindle means getting the fire going again when it has died down and is just glowing coals .. you may put small pieces of wood in the fire and work at getting the fire going again..rekindle the fire.
