Montreal is one of the world's most interesting, cosmopolitan, multi-cultural cities. It is very European-like and one does not need a car. Full of museums, the gastronomic capital of Canada.
Lovely residential area architecture (the downtown is unfortunately typical North American skyscraper). No slummy or abandoned areas. It is also very, very libertine, for those that wish to let go in that way.

Been there, done it, loved it, would do it again! Didn't like the driving experience there, though. Not necessarily any worse than other major cities, but not fun in any case.
