Tourniquet

Two tourniquets of different fabrication, these are used for venipunctureA tourniquet is a tightly tied band applied around a body part (an arm or a leg) sometimes used in an attempt to stop severe traumatic bleeding, but also during venipuncture, and other medical procedures. Severe bleeding means the loss of more than 1,000 ml (1 litre) of blood. This flow of blood can soak a paper or cloth handkerchief in a few seconds. In such a situation, the bleeding will cause the death of the casualty in seconds to minutes.

A tourniquet is a last resort method of bleeding control. Other methods that should be applied first and in conjunction, if possible, include:

direct pressure
elevation of the limb or wound above the heart
the use of a pressure point to slow the artery above the injury(s)
blood-clotting agents or bandages
Even in cases of amputation, most bleeding can be controlled through these alternative methods. The rare exception is when a limb is shattered by massive trauma or when a major blood vessel is torn along its length. Even in these cases, the use of a pressure point above the wound (i.e. proximal to the wound), or application by a doctor of an hemostat, to clamp the blood vessel above the tear is strongly preferred.

The use of tourniquets is taught to emergency medical technicians including combat lifesavers, and as a part of military first aid in basic training. It is also part of the French basic first aid courses (for bystanders).

Tourniquets are also used during some orthopedic surgeries to allow the surgeon to work in a bloodless field. When used this way the duration of application and pressure of the tourniquet are carefully monitored. Under these well controlled conditions complications from the tourniquet are rare

anything that can be wrapped or tied around a limb to limit the blood flow in it .

you use a tournqet if someone cuts their wrist badly so they dont loose blood .

you also use a tourniquet in case of snake bites to limit the spread of venom .

also when you want to give someone an iv injection the tourniqet prevents the blood from leaving the arm and this causes the veins to swell up making it easier to find and penetrate the vein .

a tourniquet can be a strap of cloth , a rubber hose , elastic band etc .
the idea is to put pressure on the blood vessels of a limb (arm or leg) to slow the blood flow or cut it off partly .

Tourniquet is a device similar to a the cloth piece tied on the arm when measuring blood pressure with a BP instrument. In simple form it could just be a string tied to any body parts mostly limbs to stop the flow of blood past it. but like in a BP cloth piece it is inflated to stop blood flow past it as perhaphs required in a syrgery of a limb. it helps in to prevent blood loss.

Aside from those mentioned above, a tourniquet is a piece of rubber tubing that is used in venipuncture or phlebotomy to collect blood from the veins. It is also used in blood letting or collection of blood from blood donors. This is to make the veins prominent and at the same time regulates the flow of blood.
