You cannot, unfortunately. Apple designed the iPod to hide your files beneath layers of special coding to protect your iPod from being used with non-Apple software (such as Windows Media Player, Real Player, Winamp, ect)

The reason they want you to use iTunes is mainly because it's Apple software, but with that they make money; if they can get you to buy their music from the iTunes store, then they've won.

NO ipod cant play windows media files. itunes has to convert all the songs first. i know it sucks LOL

No. You can only use iTunes.
