You get some mastec also known as tile glue, put it where you want the tiles to go then put the tiles on it. Then the next day you put grout in the cracks. Just smear it on good then scrape off the excess with a trowel and then lightly with a damp sponge wipe the grout off the tiles but go lightly over the seams so you leave it smooth. Since it's in a kitchen you probabably want to put some grout sealer in the cracks after the grout dries.

Make sure your wall area is flat and smooth, snap a level line and go by that, no matter what, Simple.
