ducks have a little grease nipple at the top of their tails ,

when they preen their feathers, they rub a little grease,
on each feather and that keeps them watertight .

water birds have evolved with more grease than other birds and so their feathers stay dry in or out of the water .
.
Air is trapped between the feathers, keeping the ducks floating ,
so they do not drown ......

All birds have a preen gland , which helps to keep them dry in wet weather , birds ( go fluffy) and trap air, to keep them warm in cold weather ,

Well, I am only guessing, but it could be that the duck doesn't drown because its lungs are in the opposite direction, you know. The direction that stays over water as the duck is swimming?

I believe its because of fatty waxes on thier feathers. They repel water off of the duck. It's where we get the expression "like water off a duck's back".
