A crow flies (always ina straight path) from its nest to a point 10 miles north and 7 miles east of the nest. At that point, it sees a scarecrow, and so it turns and flies to a point 4 miles farther north and 5 miles east. From ther it flies directly back to the nest. To the nearest mile what is the total distance the crow flies?

1st part of journey: 10 north & 7 east- to find the diagonal distance imagine it as a triangle 7 use pythagorus theorm a^2 + b^2 = c^2 so 10^2 + 7^2 = 149 c^2=149 so c= 12.206.....
2nd part of the journey: 4north & 5east- uas pythagorus again, so 4^2 + 5^2= c^2 c^2=41 so c= 6.403...
It flies there & back so total distance= 37 miles to the nearest mile

First part:
c² = 10² + 7²
c² = 149
c = √149 = 12.2 miles (approximately)

Second part:
c² = 4² + 5²
c² = 41
c = √41 = 6.4 miles (approximately)

Last part:
c² = 14² + 2²
c² = 200
c = √200 = 14.1 miles (approximately)

12.2 + 6.4 + 14.1 = 32.7 miles

ANSWER: The total distance travelled by the crow is approximately 33 miles.

*Note: This answer is correct. I will draw a picture to show you, but the main thing is, you can't just double the distance of the first two parts of the journey because the crow "always travels in a straight line".

*Edit: Here is the picture. It should help you understand the answer...

10 + 4 = 14 call this a
7 + 5 = 12 call this b

a^2 + b^2 = c^2
196 + 144 = 340
sqr(340) = rounded 18 call this c

a + b + c = 44 miles

Distance to first point is sqrt(10^2+7^2)
Distance to next point is sqrt(4^2+5^2)
Distance back to nest is sqrt(14^2+12^2)
So total distance is sqrt(149)+sqrt(41) +sqrt(340)=37 miles

we have 7 east and 5 east, 10 north 4 north, add them we have
12 east and 14 north.
a^2+b^2=c^2
12^2+14^2=c^2
c=18.439miles

This can be solved by applying Pythagoras to each of the three triangles involved. The math is straightforward, although tedious unless you have a calculator handy.
