I know what you mean, but the movie is so iconic now, and that image especially that they figure everyone has seen it already, so it won't spoil anything. They are using the best image to sell the re-sell the film.

Why not? Until the end, the movie gives you no idea that it takes place back on earth, so nothing is given away. The cover gives you no clear clue on what will be revealed.
