Gamecubes are practically free on Ebay. Games are super kid friendly and there are less violent and gorey games on the Gamecube than on the ps2 and xbox. If you are really concerned about the violence go with Gamecube.

Buy the gamecube; however, if you have the extra cash and patience to wait, get a wii instead. The wii is backward compatible with the gamecube and has some really nice features. I wouldn't go with xbox. Gamecube is definitely kid friendly. PS2 would be good as well, you probably can get more games for ps2 at a better price.
