Yes, no matter what brand, make, hardware, or software on your computer there is always the risk of getting a virus no matter what you have or how expensive the virus protection was.

Every OS has the potential of getting a virus. Linux especially, since Linus is OPEN source than it can be totally hacked/spywared/destroyed within minutes. The only reason you see Windows always a target because over 80% of the world uses Microsoft therefore no one bothers with Apple, Linux, Unix, etc that much. Right now according to the hackerswatch.org, Linux is the Highest OS that can be completely taken over by a deadly hacker or program.

There are computer virii for every operating system. Linux systems however are spared from the normality of Virus's that plagues Windows systems.

If you decide to give Linux a try I suggest trying out the most Windows like distribution called Linspire.

There have been, are still, and will be.

Just that linux isnt popular, so why write to target them? Therefore, the malware is rare - BUT IT IS OUT THERE.
