I am not gothic or emo personally, but I do have freinds who are gothic and emo. They don't always wear black, and don't worship satan. They don't slit their wrists all the time, don't wanna kill people. They are just like everyone else, they have feelings too. I just wanna know why people don't like them. I have this girl in my study hall, she's not Gothic, or Emo, and she used to cut her self. This other girl in my sunday school class called Goth's and Emo's freaks. It really get's on my nerves. But I would like to know why people think badly about goth's and emo's.

I agree, some of the nicest peope i have met and some of my best friends in school were goths, or "grungers" because we didn't have emos back then in the UK. And though i never got into the scene myself i do miss hanging out withmy old friends sometimes because they were always accepting of you and had the greatest conversations.

I've been hearing a lot about the supposed emo/goth bashing, but have yet to meet anyone who actually cared one way or the other. There is a lot of press about the long suffering emo/goth - perhaps this explains something?
There are a lot of people who get called freaks and such, it's just comical that they're getting called this just because of their clothing and the connotations that this holds for a few people. My guess, though, is that some of the kids that are getting called freaks are probably reveling in it (and why not?! who wants to be boring?!)

As an aside - you mentioned that "they don't slit their wrists all the time". Maybe they do it only on every third Tuesday?

Sorry, I can't help you to understand this, because I ask myself the same question.

I don't have a problem with Goths or Emos... they're just following the path that they think is right for them, and who are these bigotted people who call them freaks? I guess they have something missing from their life and they need to get out there and find themselves.

I'm not Gothic or Emo either, but I am Pagan, and I believe that everybody is entitled to their own opinion and their own, personal path in life. If the Goths and Emos are happy, then they should ignore the others who name-call and just continue happily on with what they're doing.

Love is the law and love is the bond. :-)

Cuz they're all a buncha chavs, that's why. I think it's great they have a group they can identify with like that though. Lots of people are uncomfortable when others don't conform to their standards of normality. That's insecurity at best, or bigotry at worst. I think goths and emos are cool and I love the diversity that modern society offers. I'm not into any trends or fads personally, but it makes the world a more interesting place.

I imagine you're in high school which means that anyone who appears to be weaker than others is usually going to be picked on so to assist in raising the attackers self esteem, which means the attacker usually has low self esteem.

There seems to be some sort of high school mentality whereas if you do not conform to a particular ideology you're looked at as, weird, freak, gross or stupid. I imagine this is due to people outside of their sphere being unable to interpret others personalities and characteristics which means that at the heart of it all is fear. In a way the people who speak ill of others are afraid of them. Not necessarily intimidated by them just afraid of them because they don't understand them and when you don't understand something it's much harder to control it and lack of control and the desire to control are derivatives of fear.

It's easier to attribute negative qualities to something you don't understand and don't want to open yourself up to learning about. Different is often defined as weird when it's not in the "norm". Get it over and be yourself. Why would you even speculate or seek approval from someone who is closed minded. Be you and put energy into efforts that promote who you are. If that doesn't work..speak out. Talk to the adult in your class and let her know how you feel and explain that it's important to address in a forumn so that you're not consistently in an environment that you are demeaned, you deserve the same respect as everyone else.

If that doesn't work..smash her face..j/k

Everybody thinks bad about someone or some group, it normal and will never change. If a person or group stands out different from the so called norm then people are either afraid or think they are bad people. The end result will always be that if you stand out from the norm you must expect the abnormal.

Well maybe they shouldn't portray themselves that way. That is how they come off to people, and frankly if they don't like it they will have to change or just deal with it.

It's probably because, as pale as most of them are, they remind people of Mimes, and no one likes mimes.
