There are many audio formats. Right now, the two common formats are WMA and MP3 for music. The MP3 is the standard, but of course, Microsoft wants to be special, so they created the Windows Media Audio format. While they claim it is higher quality and better compression, in reality, you will not see or hear the difference. While Ipods only support mp3's, you will see non-ipod products (zune, zen, etc) support wma and mp3 formats. It would be wise to purchase an mp3 play that supports both, so you will have more of a versatile investment.

WMA is like an mp3 file but normally doesnt take as much space, you can transfer a 5 MB mp3 into a WMA and make it 3 MB with almost the same quality, WMA is windows media audio I think.
ALSO, you can listen to WMA on almost any mp3 player

WMA is for Windows Media files. They're audio files, too. If you buy audio files online, they're often WMA because they can be copyright protected. If you download all your own stuff for free using Kazaa or whatever P2P you probably won't ever need the WMA functionality.
