When you say "staring" I wonder if you mean just looking at you and your friends or really staring as in for a few minutes or so. If they are staring it may be that they have just noticed you or it could be that this guy you are interested in has them staring at you and your friends to "size you up" so to speak. What I mean is that they are taking a good look at you and evaluating you and your friends for this guy. This guy may want their opinion beause he trusts them. Of course the fact they are staring at you and your friends may mean nothing. As far as when you should stop trying to reach him that is your decision. If you want to meet him in person than go ahead and while you are at it ask him why his friends are staring at you and your friends. Don't ever be shy in trying to find out what you need to know. It can save you from making big mistakes down the road.

Well the clear reason to me is that your guy friend has told his mates that you two have spoken via IM, and now his mates see you and your mates as available.
