Do they have money to burn or are they complete morons? If it weren't for idiots ringing in and making the program makers a fortune they wouldn't be polluting our TV screens night and day.

Morons is a bit harsh I feel. No, they are people who are more or less ignorant of the cost of making calls to TV quiz shows.

There are moves afoot in parliament and elsewhere to force these TV quiz shows to make it abundantly clear to potential phone callers of the real cost of doing so. But that's probably about as effective as printing in large black letters the words SMOKING KILLS on the side of a cigarette packet. (Kills what, I wonder, not me surely?)

I presume you're talking about stuff like quiz call, etc. I think maybe we're talking about the more gullible of people out there who are enticed by the cash prizes and the quiz hosts charming and persuasive manner to call in. It is a con, people do win money but you'd have to be very lucky to do so, I'll stick to the lottery

I know someone who racked up £400 on their mobile phone in one evening, the possible prize was just £12k.

She's not an idiot, however I would say that it is not totally sane behaviour.
