The first concern is: what can she take to combat the fever? and the second, can she continue breast feeding the baby or should we get some milk to feed the baby while her fever goes away?

If the mom is sick, it's still best for her to continue to breastfeed.

First off.....baby was exposed to whatever mom has before mom had symptoms.

Second.....mom's body is making antibodies to whatever she has and these will be passed to the baby through the milk. This will help to keep him from getting sick, or if he does get ill it will most likely not be as bad as what mom had.

Many meds are fine to take while breastfeeding. The last two links will let you check some meds. Acetaminophen would be fine for her to take for her fever, for example.

#1.... tylenol is safe to take while breastfeeding.. just like it was while pregnant and should help with the fever.

#2..... she should continue to breastfeed the baby. She is making antibiotics for whatever the fever is caused by and the baby needs those. Also .. if she stops breastfeeding now she won't build a good supply up and may not be able to breastfeed after she isn't sick.

Depending on how high her fever is will tell you if you need to take her to the doctor or not. She can get mastitis and it makes a women feel like she has the flu. Fever and all. Also... make sure she gets enough fluids because nursing requires a lot and a fever takes some away. Good luck and CONGRATS on your son!!!

IF she is taking meds I would suggest that you use another form of feeding like pumped breast milk or formula. She will need to pump her breast however to keep the milk supply up. The fever should go away soon , fevers generally do not last long so she should be able to BF agian soon. People gets fevers b/c thier bodies are fighting off infections, so let her get better and feed your baby with a bottle for a few days

it's important that the baby still get the breastmilk especailly since your wife has a fever. There are powerful and important antibodies in breastmilk that your baby needs to defeat various illnesses. Many babies have problems with formulas and formula doesn't provide antibodies.

Try to have your wife abstain from medications. Dress scantily and drink lots of water and some juices.

Hope she feels better soon

There are very few illnesses that keep moms from breastfeeding. Fever is not one of them. Your wife can continue to breastfeed your baby and if she decides to see a doctor, just let them know that whatever they give her has to be safe for a nursing infant. If she wants, she can take Tylenol safely.

I got an infection after I had my daughter, and I was also breastfeeding. The Dr and nurses in the hospital made me stop nursing, but it turns out I has sepcis, and they gave me tylenol, as well as antibiotics. Tell your wife to take TYLENOL DO NOT TAKE MOTRIN.You may also need to supplement a feeding or two until her fever goes down.As long as she is running a fever over 102. she should supplement a feeding with formula.
Hope she feels better soon!

Get her checked about the fever, does she have flu like symptoms ? It could be mastitis, and needs to be looked at. Don't stop breast feeding until your doctor tells you have to.
She can take regular strength tylenol for sure.
