At this time of year houseplants need a much smaller amount of water; I'd say that if you were turning your central heating right down while you were away, then most plants would probably be ok. Especially ones in larger pots. Plants in little pots would not do so well, as they have such a small soil reservoir and that soil would dry out faster.

Could you just leave your more substantial plants in situ, and take the smaller ones to someone's house or to work, to be looked after by a suitably green fingered person?

They have various "self-watering" plant devices - some are electricity powered and include a hose which releases gradually water over any period of time you set it to, so that the soil never dries out. Check out these sites for more info:

There are many other sites out there, just type in something along the lines of "self watering device" and you're bound to find the one that suits your needs.

I have a lot of plants and I know what a hassle it can be to figure out how to keep your plants alive while you're away, so these products make things easier. Good luck!

This time of year they don't need much watering so leave them in saucers of water so they can soak up what they want and just before you leave give the leaves a light spray mist. If your house is empty it will be cold too so they won't dry out.
