Years ago, I dated a woman named Mary. Once a month, she was real bloody. Yes, it's real.

Yes, in two forms.

Mary 1st Tudor Queen of England, 1553 -1558 AD (married Philip of Spain - That was said to be doomed from the start) Her father was Henry 8th and Catherine of Aragon. She was a devout catholic and tried to persuade the ever growing population of English protestants to becoming catholic. If the refused to recant their Catholicism, they were burned at the stake - people often call her bloody Mary, she has gone down in history. I know this because on my mother side - two brothers were burned at the stake under her reign 400/500 years ago - Thomas and Richard Spurge. I hope that helps.

The other 'bloody Mary' is an alcoholic drink, made with vodka and tomato juice - some people have spices in it.

Bloody Mary was the name given to Mary Stuart, wanna-be queen of the Scots. There was constant strife and war in the British Isles while she was alive, and she may have been responsible for several murders, hence the name.

Well, there's the drink Bloody Mary.

Then, there was Queen Mary, the daughter of Henry VIII, in 16th century, who had thousands of people burnt for practicing protestantism (she was a catholic). The name Bloody Mary doesn't really suit the situation since she had people burnt, but it was the fact of how many had died that had earned her the nickname.

Funny story...and true!!

My son is 23 now. When he was 8 years old he came home from school and said that another kid told him if he was in a dark room looking into the mirror and said "Bloody Mary" 3 times she would appear to him. I told him that was not so. He said but mom that boy said it happened to him. So I told him to go into the bathroom and I would stand right outside the door and not let anything happen to him. He did it, and a few seconds later he opened the door smiling alittle like he nervous and said "You were right, nothing happened".

yes, the historical part of the story is as real as it gets, mary queen of scots was at one time to ascend the throne of england although her sister becoming jealous accused her completely 100% falsely of witchcraft so she was condemned in a court to be beheaded, but to make a long story short she was beheaded and it took 3 swings to cut through (not making that up even slightly) and her sister asceneded the throne though she was so disliked by the people that she was shortly thereafter forced into exile

Mary, Queen of Scotland (sometimes called Queen of Scots) was a very real person that had many people beheaded several centuries ago. That is why she was called "Bloody Mary"

There is a reference to a Bloody Mary in the Broadway show "South Pacific," i.e., "Bloody Mary eats betel nuts, Bloody Mary eats betel nuts and she don't use Pepsodent ... "

I don't know why they called Bloody Mary Bloody Mary in this play. Maybe the betel nuts turned her teeth and mouth red??? Really don't know but this song stuck in my head for some reason.
