I have an old laptop which i want to run linux on(becasue windows got corrupted and Linux is faster) but when I access the hard drive in linux it comes up with an error. I tryed to erase, partition and format the hard drive with gparted but it says the HD is protected. Is this because the HD will only work with Window's which I had previously installed and is there any way to fix it.

make sure Goback is not installed if so you should notice in the boot an option to disable it which will remove Goback and allow nomarl partition, use win98 cd to boot to command prompt, run fdisk and delete partition(s),
