The longest suspension bridge in the world is in Akashi, Japan.
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, also known in Japan as the Pearl Bridge, has a record main span of 1,991 meters. By comparison, the bridge is 366 meters (almost ¼ mile) longer than the previous record holder, the StoreBaelt (East Bridge) in Denmark, which was also opened in 1998. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is also 580 meters longer than the Humber Bridge in England, constructed in 1981; 692 meters longer than the longest suspension bridge in the United States, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York, built in 1964; and 710 meters longer than the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, constructed in 1937.
It cost an estimated 500 billion Japanese yen (U.S. $3.6 billion) to build the bridge. Construction began in 1988 and involved more than 100 contractors.

The Akashi bridge in Japan.
Dear Yahoo!:
Which is the longest bridge in the world?
Jamie
Astoria, Oregon
Dear Jamie:
We get quite a few superlative questions (longest, tallest, fastest, etc.) and we never tire of answering them. Here's how we found an answer to yours:
We searched on the phrase "world's longest bridge" and found several sites that matched. All were contained in a single Yahoo! category, so we decided to head there first. We clicked on Highways and Roads > Bridges and had a look around.
Among the many listings, we noticed several intriguing titles, some of which hadn't shown up in our initial search. From our quick scan, the best of the bunch looked to be The BridgeSite, which offered a ton of information and links to dozens of related sites.
It was via those links, under BridgeSite's Fun and Learning section, that we found a pair of pages that quickly answered your question. The first was Steel Bridges of the World, a nice statistical site from the Swedish Institute of Steel Construction. They offer extensive lists of bridges in each of four categories (arch, beam, suspension, and cable-stayed) ranked by length, as well as a number of other record-setting bridges, including oldest, highest, and widest.
According to this list, the Akashi Kaikyo bridge in Japan takes the title, with a main span of 1,991 meters (or 6,532 feet). There are bridges that actually cover longer distances, especially in the cable-stayed category, but the general rule in judging record-breaking bridges seems to be to consider the longest span, or the longest point-to-point connection without a pier or arch underneath.
The second resource we spotted elaborated even further. The 40-page PDF document from the American Institute of Steel Construction, titled "World's Largest Bridge Spans," details the location, year, and length of 10 different types of spans, from suspension bridges to prestressed concrete girder bridges. (Longest of the latter? Boca Tigris in Guangdong, China, at 886 feet.)
At the head of the class was the Akashi bridge, as noted above, which was completed in 1998. However, what we found even more fascinating was the mention of a bridge, still being designed, that will cross the Messina strait from mainland Italy to the island of Sicily, covering 10,827 feet in the process. That sent us scurrying back to the Web to learn more about this super-sized span.
Happily, a Yahoo! search for "messina strait bridge" yielded the project's official page, which offers a history of the undertaking as well as several breathtaking renderings of what the finished bridge will look like.
