what do you really think of mature students on the same course?

i graduated 2 years ago and i had a few friends who were mature students, all of them guys, but i found them a valuable asset! Only because they actually had knowledge on the topics rather than talking about irrelevant things.

In the first year i often found them to be intimidating if im honest but on the whole it was nice to have people from all backgrounds. Plus most of them had good contacts with other areas i was into!

Also after talking with some mature students they often talked about trying for a career change so it made sense that they were at university, or that they had experience but required a formal degree.

I find your question odd, does age mean that you have to act a certain way? I think not!

I'm 21 and i started uni in September, i have friends from 18 up into their 30's and at then end of the day we are all students, we all want to do student things.

If anyone, i am not suggesting you do, but if people have a problem with mature students then they should realize that learning comes to us at different ages.

That and being 25+ doesn't mean people should expect mature behavior, and also mature students have the benefits of age behind them.

Some of my best friends when I was at uni (as a "normal age" student) were mature students.

What is a "normal age"? These days any age is normal. I applaud those that are older and nontraditional students that return to school. I'm a 22 year old freshman, and I love my classes. I have classes with people as young a 18 and as old as 57.

i dont have a problem with mature students provided they are expecting to be treated exactly the same as everyone else and dont think because they are older they should be treated with deference.

the only thing that annoys me about them is that usually they do not have to pay tuition fees, and i find it unfair that when i am going to work in a graduate level job at a graduate salary for 45 years, and as such pay a lot of extra tax, they get to do it at 50 and get it free

I've hardly seen any at all around LJMU, but my girlfriend's in the same class as a fair few mature students (I'm 19, she's 18) and they all seem to like her (Not in that way, I hasten to add!!)

She does foundation Chemistry, I'm doing BA(Hons) International Business Studies and French (4 years).

At first I thought "why didn't they take this course earlier?"

I guess they either changed majors, or came to college at a different time in their life, or put off taking the course till later...or came from another college and had to take that course for a pre-requisite. I guess, for group projects, it would be best (in most situations) to seek them out since they appear to be more responsible but perhaps it depends.

I found as an older student I was much wiser and much more sensible that the pretend adults on the same course.

I don't like it when some of the older students pretend they are our age, but mostly they contribute good ideas to discussions and are pretty "normal" overall.
