he set up hotels and railroads in florida.
he's also known as the father of miami.

he chose miami as a terminal city over palm beach because of a bad winter down there where every place frosted, except for the unincorporated dade county.

they wanted to name it Flagler, but he chose to have it named after the Miama indians.

flagella is/was the name of the man who came, saw & developed lower florida (and into the keys). miami was nothing more than a sleepy little swamp town when flagler, with his money (made i believe in railroads & other turn-of-the-century investments) he saw potential in miami & miami beach. this was in the early 20th century and by 1920s, he created the flagler hotel, brought railroads & other inventors/hotels to the greater miami area. not content with that, he moved further south, built a railroad to key west, later extended highway 1 to key west, etc. it was all done to suit his personal gratification and those of his wealthy friends, but it would be the average joe & jane who would benefit the most, in later years, for the growth & development of miami regions & south. in fact, csi:miami wouldn't be without flagler & friends.
