The American School of Madrid (ASM) is an independent, coeducational, college-preparatory day school, which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1961. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from September 6 to January 26 and from January 30 to June 22.
Organization: The School is governed by a Board of Trustees. Board membership is self-perpetuating. The American Ambassador has traditionally accepted the honorary presidency of the Board. Legally recognized as a Spanish Association, the School operates under statutes approved by the Spanish Ministry of Education.
Curriculum: The curriculum is similar to that of U.S. college-preparatory, private, non-profit schools. The School's testing program includes the National Merit and College Board tests. Instruction is in English. Spanish and French are taught as foreign languages. Most of the graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States. For students in grades 1-8, English-as-a-Second-Language and remedial reading are offered through the School's Optimal Learning program. ASM may admit and offer assistance to students with a diagnosed mild learning disability. Psychological testing, as well as private remedial assistance is available in the community. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the International Baccalaureate Organization, and the Spanish Ministry of Education.
Faculty: In the 2006-2007 school year, there are 81 full-time and 10 part-time faculty members. In addition, ASM has 2 guidance counselors, 1 librarian and 2 library associates, 7 administrators, 1 full-time school nurse, 1 part-time nurse, 10 administrative support staff, and a crew of 5 in the maintenance department.
