Every year we make a family ornament, and then we make some to give as a personal gifts to our close friends, everyone looks forward to the next home made ornament they receive from us, and it shows how the kids are growing up on the skill level of the ornaments.

As a kid we always went to my grandparents house and had a special traditional dinner (a recipe that my Great-Grandma made up), then the entire family goes to church to see my Nana sing in the choir (well I guess we went to church for "religious" reasons, but the real reason I went was to was to watch my Nana sing). Anyway, now that that I have my own family, we have started our own traditions. We set our tree up on Dec. 1st and decorate the house that day as well. On the 6th, we make gingerbread houses and have a traditional meal. On Christmas Eve we have that same traditional dinner that I had as a kid, we make cookies for Santa, and we sprinkle oatmeal and chunks of apples and carrots for the rain-deer around our house, and we exchange 1 present each (always new p.j.'s). On Christmas Day we always have a traditional breakfast, open gifts, watch "The Christmas Story", play games and what not, but we wait until bedtime to open the gifts from our stocking (I started doing this as a kid, so that way Christmas really lasted all day long). Then on Boxing Day, we collect stuff for people who need more than we do.

With my kids, ages 12, 5, 3, and 1, we each have a job to do. The oldest poors the glass of milk, the 5 yr old gets 7 carrots out for the reindeer, my daughters pick out 1 cookie each and put it on the Santa plate. Then mommy writes the note to Santa. Then we read Christmas stories before they go to bed.

On Christmas Eve, we read the Christmas story from the Bible and then bake cookies and pies for Christmas day. When I was a kid, we would put out the cookies for Santa and carrots for the reindeer. My son is 2 years old this Christmas, and I think we are going to do that with him this year. My parents STILL buy me and my sister new Christmas PJs every year, and we are 27 and 29!

My family would always have a Christmas Eve Party with all kinds of finger foods, chips and dips, and punch, then we would watch a Christmas movie, open our presents from each other then go to bed, my dad says the party was great for the years when we didn't have many presents because we always had so much fun we didn't care about the gifts, Christmas morning we would wake up, see what Santa left for us and stuff our faces with candy ; )

We have taken the Christmas Jammies even farther. Every year one family is responsible to get the entire family new jammies and on Christmas day everyone from Grandma down to the newest family member all wear there jammies all day. (Yes, the adults all shower and put on make up, do their hair or the men shave etc - typical daily hygiene) The jammies sometimes all match too. It really is fun because the kids think it is a blast that Moms and Dads, Aunts Uncles, and grandpartents can all be in there jammies all day. Even our teenage kids are into it, the boys will go outside and skateboard etc.

My family used to have X-mas traditions but they died when my parents did. On Christmas Eve we would have one of our neighbors over for Christmas dinner and gift exchange then after they left I was allowed to open one gift before I went to bed, then on Christmas day we would get up and I would pass out the gifts and before we started opening gifts I would get mine and the dog's stockings down and see what I had gotten from my folks had gotten me and I would give our pet the toy I had stuck in there, then starting with me I would pick a gift, say who it is from, open it and show it to everybody else, then my father, then my mother, after we opened our gifts we would put them away and take down the tree.

Potato pancakes and waffles are made eaten all day on Christmas Eve and usually open all our gifts on Christmas Eve since we're too excited to wait. i guess we don't have Christmas traditions, we have Christmas Eve traditions because we usually go to someone's house on Christmas day to feast.

We decorate our tree exclusively with home made ornaments which we make during the advent time, and have a real fir tree with real wax candles after the German tradition.
(And no, it's NOT too dangerous, we survived the last 20 years alright)
