The heat of the fire warped the steel support structure, The planes were loaded with so much fuel the fire became too intense and the fire proofing was blown off the steel supports. The Towers were actually designed to withstand a collision with an airplane. But the planes were coming in too fast and had too much fuel in them. The fact that they were struck so low accelerated the collapse b/c of the weight of the upper storeys.

some theories say that it was imploded because:

1. WTC 7 collapsed like it was imploded.
2. the towers were designed to survive the impact of a fully loaded 747, which weighed more and, if i remember right, had a slightly higher high speed than a 767.

another theory is that there was something else on board. in a video clip of the south tower being hit, a long, skinny object is seen flying ahead of the plane, thus bringing in the question of if it was brought down by the planes and not a missile.

plus, one of the fire chiefs said "pull it" to another firefighter while they were fighting the blaze in WTC 7. in implosion operations, the term "pull it" means to detonate the charges in the building. but he could also be saying " pull our guys out. there's no saving it" but we may never now if that was what he meant. but investigations on whether or not it was imploded were conducted and all tests found negative. there were also tanks of diesel fuel for generators at the base of the building which may have gone off.

the accepted cause for the tower collapse is that in the initial blast, that fire retardant on the steel girders was blown off allowing the steel to burn and and the floors to collapse onto each other which mess with the structural integrity of the towers and further weaken them.

that is a good question. the answer is that they did not fall because of the terrorist attacks. they were part of a controlled demolition.
First of all, they each fell to the ground in 10 seconds. That is from the start of the collapse until the the top hits the gound. That is the speed of freefall as if every floor collapsed at the same time. You know what, I'm just going to give you a few websites to go to because there is a lot to explain.

just watch the loose change videos and decide for yourself.

here are the normal theories: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/wtc/sund-flash.html

The simple answer is that they brought themselves down because the weakened structure couldn't support the weight above the lines of damage. A sort of implosion if you like.
They met building standards at the time they were built but nobody in their wildest dreams thought that such an attack could ever happen.
After so much publicity over the last five years why do we still get these questions?

Bill's answer is the correct one, but he didn't mention that the planes struck the towers partway down, and the weakened steel structure couldn't support the weight of the building above the damage point. When the top of each tower collapsed and began to fall, the remaining steel under the damage point couldn't take the force of the falling upper storeys.

The twin towers were hit by airliners flown by Islamist terrorists on September 11, 2001.

Any other theory regarding their collapse is only held by people with severe mental problems who require institutionalization for the protection of themselves and others.

Two airplanes struck the towers. This caused a fire, and weakened the structure of the buildings.

I am not certain as to whether the buildings were supposed to be designed to withstand an aircraft strike, if so probably just for light/private jets.

The physical forces must have been enormous.

The heat from the jet fuel fires weakened the steel beams, then they collapsed one on top the the other adding weight to the next lower level as they fell.

**** Cheyney arranged for a simultaneous implosion -- scheduled right after the plane flown by the Roswell Aliens hit it!

Actually, 19 Muslim Hijackers were involved...contrary to what the more loonie half of the left would like you to think!
