I have one too. I got it in middle school from my social studies teacher. He got it from a friend. Mine originated from Minnesota. Other than that I'm just as in the dark as you. I also have an indian penny the same size.

They are made as souvenir items. Some people use them as coaster. Most are made up to resemble rare coins like the 1913-S type II nickel or the 1877 Indian head cent. I have one that is like the 1907 high relief $20 gold piece. They sell for a few dollars. They are not a collectors item as I know it, but it might be fun to try and get as many different ones as one can. There maybe even some old ones out there made before or just after WW II.
