It is a way of saying coo-ee -- a casual and rather coy greeting.

Children use the word when playing hide and seek.

Be warned, though -- the word "coucou" also has the sinister meaning of cuckold, a man whose wife is deceiving him. I avoid using it for that reason!

LOL!! Ok, here in Canada cou cou is slang for " you are crazy"
