Those who were around and remember the election in 1960 remember that Religion was a big issue in 1960. Some said that because John Kennedy was Catholic he would be taking orders from the Pope.

It is clear based on his performance that Kennedy was able to separate religion from the Oath that he took to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States, including the aspects of the Constitution concerning the separation of church and state.

As a result of Kennedy's performance, when Joe Lieberman ran as a Vice-Presidential Candidate, his Jewish faith was not an issue and barely deserved a footnote.

This is certainly an individual matter. George W Bush certainly has allowed his religious beliefs to affect his Presidential Decisions and even ran on a platform of allowing a greater intermingling of religion and government.

Only Keith Ellison's record will determine if he is able to separate his Ismalic beliefs from the Oath that he will take to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States. His record could either pave the way for others, or close the door.

Hey, maybe someone from Minny could answer? How would that be?
Ellison is more than just a black muslim, he is a Wellstonian Progressive, something that we have been missing in Minny for years. In the same way that Wellstone ticked people off in Washington, Ellison will do the same, only his statements will be framed by his race and religion. Too bad, but I look forward to his leadership.
As regards the Koran instead of the Bible for the oath? Who cares? I wouldn't want a person of different faith to swear on the holy book of a religion he or she does not believe in, it diminishes the oath.
Fox in the hen-house? You make an excellent case for aristocracy.
Respose to Harley:
All terrorists are Muslim? How about the IRA? Or in our hemisphere, how about the Shining Path which is regenerating in Peru, or the tens of thousands of Colombians killed by FARC, the AUC and the ELN?
Response:
I'd recommend that you take a course on Islam... but who are we kidding. Muslims are not a homogenous group, there are those out there, for example from former Soviet Satellites who are just rediscovering their faith. All these are this and all those are that, such descriptions are rarely accurate.

Probably the most ignorant question I've seen in quite a while. It is extremely bad form to generalize one group or religion. There are good Muslims as well as bad.

Allow me to point out, not knowing much about this guy, that a "Muslim" and a "Black Muslim" are not the same thing. Actual Muslims do not consider Black Muslims as real Muslims. Now I don't know if this guy is a real Muslim or a Black Muslim, so he may be a "real" Muslim. Let's remember that people are individuals and he may be one of those few peaceful Muslims.

Several possibilities:

they felt he was the better candidate,

the backlash against Republican rule was so strong that people in that district were voting democrat no matter what or

the citizens of Minneapolis wanted national attention for something other than their weather, and

they don't think all Muslims are the enemy

They can vote for who they like. As for harley_s, stop being
foolish. All terrorists aren't Muslim. I guess the KKK, Nazis, Tim McVeigh, the Unabomber, the Irish Republican Army. the Mafia, and other people like them don't count as terrorists in your book, because they aren't Muslim. Actually the KKK is still around, and
so are the Nazis. Just do a search for it. That lunatic Pat Robertson is still around, asking God to kill a Pennsylvania town. The IRA
has their political wing, Sinn Fein, play a role in Irish politics. There
are Christian terrorist groups as well you know.
