That may be when it is in the defrost mode, for a short interval to rid the outdoor coil of ice build up.

Some types of heating systems (heat pumps) will cycle into AC to defrost the outside unit.
Simply put, while heating your home, cold air is discharged through the outside unit, which can cause frost to accumulate around the unit.
In the summer, the system is reversed...while your cooling your home, heat is discharged outside.
The AC should only be on for 10 to 15 minutes or so and then should switch back. Your system should also have a setting for how often it does this, usually every 30, 60 or 90 minutes. That setting was set by the HVAC fellows and is not something most homeowners adjust.

If, it works do not fix it. But, if the thermostat use a battery, you may try changing it. Have you instructions handy if you need to re-program.
