To add onto davinl1's answer...
"Hip hop music" and "rap music" mean virtually the same thing. However, some people associate the term "rap" with the more mainstream variety of the genre (which nowadays often includes R&B or pop elements and, unfortunately, is more negative) and reserve the term "hip hop" for the variety of the genre that stays closer to the roots of hip hop music (i.e. - speaking on social and/or political issues, storytelling, bragging about one's lyrical skills while roasting another MC, etc. and is more positive). Examples:
Mos Def, Common, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Lupe Fiasco, etc. = hip hop
Pall Wall, Chamillionaire, Lil Wayne, Nelly, Young Jibbs, etc. = rap
See the difference?
As for R&B, he's right - the songs mainly consist of just regular ol' love songs with a singer instead of a rapper/emcee (i.e. - Luther Vandross, Brian McKnight, Chris Brown, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, etc.). Nowadays, R&B songs will often feature a rapper or contain other hip hop/rap elements (i.e. - music produced by a hip hop producer), which is probably why a lot of people confuse the two genres.
Hope this helps. :)

And now for an intelligent answer: Hip hop is a culture made up of four main elements, but not only four. Those main four are breaking (or what the mainstream calls breakdancing), DJing, mcing (which is rapping), and graffitti art. Rap is the mc (or rapper) performing over an instrumental background, whether that's a dj or a live band, or whatever the case is. So rap is a part of hip hop, but when you say hip hop music, that just basically means rap music. It's the music of hip hop culture. R&B is basically love songs: Barry White, Boys II Men, Bryan McKnight. But a lot of people nowadaways do songs with rappers and such, since rap and r&b are considered to be 'urban' music. Hope this is enough.

rap and hip hop are really different. its the difference between black eyed peas and Gwen Stafani, its the difference between Brittaney spears and 50 cent. hip hop sounds more in the beat, rap is when someone is singing fast, and they have basically one beat through out the whole song. Honestly, in my opinion, I hate rap. I also hate hip hop, I prefer rock.

straight up rap is just that..the rapper rhyming to tell a story, usually without a noticeable "hook". like a lot of 50 cent or the game is just rap. hip-hop is more danceable, with a hook and beat, like busta rhymes, missy elliot, mary j blige. r&b means literally, rhythm and blues and is more soulful and is sung, not rapped, like anita baker, johnny gill, luther vandross. hope that helps.
