If you have an Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts in your area they can hook up an OBD2 tester to the computer to find out what is tripping the check engine light. Since it has been about 4 years with the light running it most likely isn't anything serious. As mentioned in another answer the most common problem is an oxygen sensor which can usually be not too difficult to replace. Replacing it may give you better gas mileage but this is not always the case. Just going to a your local parts store and asking them questions will most likely give you the information you need.

Could be an o2 sensor. Also could just be that something set the code off at one time and it needs to be cleared. Also maybe try disconnecting your car battery. The light may turn off and never go back on. Good luck

this problem will probably solved by putting your car on a scope or computer and finding the source --- it is most likely that you have a dead oxygen sensor and fixing this problem will get you better gas milage and improve overall performance

You could have it hooked up to the computer to see whats up or when was the last time you changed your oil? Or filters?
