# 1A If you have a pilot with a red Reset button, turn the gas valve from "Off," to "Pilot."
# 1B If you have a pilot with no red button, turn the knob from "Off" to "Pilot."
# 2 Place the lit match or ignited lighter tip at the pilot and depress and hold the button or depress the knob as appropriate. Depress the button or knob for about 30 seconds. This maintains gas flow to the pilot until the thermocouple gets hot enough to open the main gas valve.
# 3 Once the pilot stays lit, slowly release the button or knob and turn the gas knob from the "Pilot" position to the "On" position. This will ignite the burners and keep the flow of gas supplied as required for the burners as called for by the thermostat.
# 4 If the burners fail to ignite then it may be because the thermocouple did not get hot enough to open the gas valve.
# 5 If the pilot fails to stay lit, wait 5 minutes and proceed back to step #2.
#6 If after repeated attempts, the pilot still fails to stay lit, call a service technician. Your thermocouple may need replacing.

On some you set the knob to pilot, that is the only position that allows the red knob to be pushed down. Push the red knob down, I personally use a propane torch to light pilots, you can use one of those extended lighters, whatever you are comfortable with. Once it lights kept the red button pushed down until for about a minute, some take longer, some less. If the pilot stays lit then turn the knob to on. The burner should ignite if the thermostat is set calling for heat.

I not know from not seeing. Most there is a knob you turn to light and hold down and light the pilot. Hold the knob down for it to heat after lighting and then release and see if it stay going, then turn to on. You may want the Thermostat turned off, if, not, when you turn the knob to on the Burners "May" ignite, nothing serious, but, it can scare you.
