your right, it would be about a mix of politics and pop culture. And what a twisted mix that is in america, again! Remember the sixties? We had a large group of young people with highly edealized thoughts on the war then as now. That same group now is as then becoming very involved in politics as they see it. Unfortunately now, as then, thier ideas have very little to do with the reality of life or politics on the world stage. Far too many of these college age liberals view our country as the villain and any country we appose politically or militarily as the victim. The rewritten song would almost certainly contain a lot of the things that have happened since the original song was written, but almost as certainly would focus on the "illegal" war in iraq. I would be willing to bet that the new author would be completely blind to the fact that ten years of diplomacy did nothing to change the murderous regime in iraq, and just as blind to the fact that our government did not "go it alone", but was part of a large international coalition. It may appear that our government tries to run things but an intelligent observer of people, facts, and history would notice that the world at large expects us to take a leadership position on not only iraq, but many other world issues that they later accuse us of meddling in. If we stood back and did nothing the world at large accuses us of neglecting our duty as the most prosperous nation to care for the less fortunate. In a short time the history books will start to tell the tales of clinton and bush from an historical perspective that will most likely not reflect my or your current view of things, not to say they will be right, but most likely due to the long term effect we do not now see, they will be more right and far from any songwriters current take on things.

It came out around 1986. So a newer version would contain references to George Bush Sr. AND Jr., Dan Quayle, "You're no Jack Kennedy", Falling of the Berlin Wall, Death of Communism, Panama, Noriega, Desert Storm, Bill Clinton, Ross Perot, Seinfeld, Bosnia/Chechnya, Sarejevo, Black Hawk Down, Osama bin laden, 9/11, Tora bora, the Iraq fiasco, all kinds of things about the current administration.
I'm sure there's hundreds of things I left out.
