I managed to drop something on my big toe two weeks ago, in the process a small piece of the toenail broke of and imbedded itself in the fleshy area next to the nail, (yeah it hurt), I managed to get the piece of nail out with tweezers a week later (yeah that hurt too). It was healing fine till three days ago when I kicked something (yeah I am a klutz). I am afraid that the area is getting infected, How do I keep the area from becoming infected. Doctor is only a last resort, the cost is very prohibitive.

Are you a diabetic? I would get really painful infections on my big toes if I barely hit them on anything, and then found out that I was a diabetic. We tend to get infections really easy. #1. Do you get extremely thirsty and then have to pee a lot? #2. Do you get extremely tired after doing minimal work (I would have to take a 2 hour nap after only working 4 hours. #3. Do you have cuts or other sores that take longer to heal than they should? If you answer yes to any of these you need to see your doctor.

Good hygeine will keep it from getting infected. It's probably inflammed from all of that injury. Take 2 aspirin to reduce the inflammation; wash the area with soap and water and wear clean, dry cotton socks. Apply a dry bandaid if necessary for comfort. However, do not start putting Neosporin on it unless it really is infected! This can hinder healing. No peroxide...this will kill new skin cells. Now, tie yourself to your bed for a week so you don't injure it again...yea, that will hurt! I loved your question...(sense of humor anyway) Godloveya.

Dab any pus away. Put some antiseptic cream on it. Apply a small dressing to the toe by bandaging it to the toe next to it. Don't use a plaster .Inspect it daily and reapply the cream. If there's pus that won't clear up you will need a course of antibiotics.
