the best answer is where the things you want to sell are placed....if in your garage it is a garage sale, if in the yard it is a yard sale, you can even have a back yard sale!

At a garage sale, the items on sale are neatly arranged inside the garage so the sale can occur, rain or shine.
At a yard sale, the items on sale are neatly arranged on the lawn or pathways in the yard and may get damp if it rains.
Swap meets happen in empty lots, and whole hoards of people set up shop.

If you are in an area where it is likely to rain on the day of the sale you put the stuff in the garage, otherwise you put them in the yard. Same stuff and same prices.

Really not much in difference now days but years ago it was. The garage sale was mostly stuff that simply was to big to move around like: stoves, washers, dryers, freezers and most large household funishing. The yard sales were that of clothing, nick-nacks, and so small holusehold iteams.

Today, its all the same, great bargins !
