No -- although some do. China is a prime example, they attempt to control what on the internet people in their country can see. It's kind of eerie to be in a hotel room there, and not be able to get to several "normal" sites (like news sites) because they're blocked by the government. The effort fails miserably, though -- ambitious people mirror blocked sites, and provide pass-throughs, faster than the government can keep up.
These days nobody can control the free exchange of information even if they want to. Which is a good thing :)

mmmm, let me think, NO NO NO, actually the USA does control the names listed in 1st link, someone has to, but am not saying USA should. Actually the USA does control more of it than you think but not all of it, we are in control of the 13 ROOT SERVERS for Internet’s Domain Name and Addressing System (DNS) Which can make it possible to block out sites. There is actually allot of very very interesting reading on it. There are 1000s of links but just trying to link different countries versions

To Cody below: No flame intended, but where do you draw the line as far as ANTI Government site, I don't know what the right answer would be, but should our Government be able to stop any site that is against there point of view ?

I wish that the internet will remain free from any controls. When everything else are being controlled by the government, at least we still have the internet where we can exercise our freedom, our rights to free will. When the reality is no longer free, let's find our freedom beyond the reality. Amen.

They wont be able to. I attend a mass communications class and my teacher says that the US governent has tried to control the internet(especially porn) by proposing laws, but the Supreme Court would not agree on the law.

But internet control does exist in China.

Only insofar as it affects national security. For example, if a website is organizing a militant group to overthrow the nation, that nation has the right to stop it. Other than that, the government should keep it's hands off.
