Well, if you can't afford to hire a mechanic, don't know how to diagnose it yourself, it looks like you will have a dead 16 year old Pontiac sitting in your garage for a while. I couldn't venture a guess based on what you've said. What does "won't actually turn over and start" mean? Cranks at normal speed, no start? Cranks slowly, no start? No crank at all?

How can your car actually sound like it's gonna start with out turning over.
Noone is gonna be able to answer your question with the way you worded it period. And please tell me what a soft plug is. Are you talking about the freeze plugs?
And why didn't you put the make and model?
Was it running the night before with Antifreeze in it? Did it run out overnight?

ok,if it will turn over good, then check the spark at the plugs and check the gas filter to see if its ok.if the spark is not there, then it might be the coil pack and module.i have a 88 olds and that what was wrong with mine.if it wont turn over, check the battery and cable ends, also it could be the solenoid on the starter too.

i own a repair shop, and try spraying some starting fluid in to it,and see if that helps,it may have froze up on you ,but it should try to fire anyway id ry and see if it was getting good gas and fire,if not you might want to start checking for damage from the cold,it may have cracked the intake on it,,good luck,i hope this help,s.
