I bought my laptop a month ago and as soon as I first opened it, I noticed a single dead pixel. Basically it looks like a star in the center of the screen.

The store would have gladly given me a new laptop (no questions asked) but it was outside of their 14-day return policy. They sent it back to the manufacturer (Toshiba) who sent it back two weeks later saying there was nothing wrong with it.

I read the manufacturer's warranty and apparently it only covers defects in excess of five pixels. That basically means that you could have up to five dead pixels (which would make your laptop a worthless piece of camel manure) and the manufacturer won't budge.

The other frustrating part about this is that I bought the one-year store warranty which is supposed to cover even damage caused even through my own fault (e.g. beverage spills).

I just want to make sure that there's nothing else I can do and Toshiba isn't screwing me ("sodomizing me" may be a more accurate term...)

There are utilities you can download for free (check versiontracker.com or search on your favorite engine) that may, _may_ unstick a dead or frozen pixel, you just need to search for them.

They flash the screen with different colors of patterns at an insanely high rate and it sometimes wakes the pixel up.

I've also read that rubbing the pixel can help. Do it gently and with the microfiber cloth that you clean your screen with.

And if your store warranty is that great, there is always the microwave!

**read all the software disclaimers - don't rub too hard on your screen! I'm not responsible if you damage your stuff, or if the retailer doesn't honor your warranty. That said, I ran pixel fixers on my laptop, which is 3 years old, and nothing bad happened.

You can not remove dead pixels from a laptop screen, you can only replace the screen with the bad pixels.

There is nothing you can do. My fiance had troubles with Toshiba dealing with this. she sent her laptop back for repair and when we got it back there was huge lines going across the screen. Sent it back and now it has a single dead pixel. its green. nothing we can do about it.

There isn't much you can do. All laptops and LCD monitors have a dead pixel policy. Only thing you can do is hope more pixels die.

Wow! A single dead pixel. Perhaps you should donate your ruined laptop to an inner-city or rural school and buy your spoiled self a new one.
