I think people notice hair first. A change in the length, style or color will get attention quickly and even change people's perception of you. If you have shoulder-length hippie hair and show up at the office with a buzz cut, some people might ask "Oh, are you going to vote Republican now?"
Glasses are another way -- switch to or from.
The late Kevyn Aucoin was a makeup artist who could change a person's face so radically that they were unrecognizable. I have listed a site for his book that shows examples -- it's really fascinating.

Put a smile on your face and exude confidence. People are attracted to approachable people who seem confident. The rest is window dressing. You can pull off any look with an air of confidence.
