Birds have hollow bones which make them very light. Also the feathers pick up wind to help them lift off so when they flap there wings they go in the air.

some move in a circular motion, but most small ones make the front of their wings move first then the back of the wings move following. like such: /\/\/\. but not straight up and down. the air under the wings has a constant pressure, while the air over the wings is reduced by the hump looking thing on the top of the wing (this hump is where the bone is). thus since the pressure is constant on the bottom, and the pressure on the top is reduced the air causes it to rise.

I think I read its a combination of things. Included is that an airplanes wing is designed similar so when it glides the same force that works with a bird also works with a plane in that the wing shape provides lift. Easily seen in eagles. They also push through the air for forward locomotion. It also seems that when they land they create a high pressure zone under them like a harrier jet coming in for a standstill landing

I'm with the previous posters, here....
They flap their wings - but - when examined closely, one would note that the wings don't simply move in an up-and-down motion... Rather, it's a circular motion - that is, birds' wings push down and back at the same time

they have light body, big pair of wings, when they flap thier wings, the wings push the air down and the air pushes them back up. That is how they fly
