Each has its merits. Whole Foods has a larger selection, especially of "pantry staple" type items. Trader Joe's is a bit more geared toward prepared foods, and its produce, though fine, is usually prepacked in bags so that you cannot buy just one avocado, one pepper, etc. However, the prices at Trader Joe's are MUCH better, and they do have a lot of yummy food. Both stores excel in customer service; interacting with a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods cashier and interacting with a Safeway or Fresh Grocer cashier is like night and day. My housemates and I were pondering this the other day: do they pay the TJ's/WF cashiers a lot more, or what? Why are their cashiers THAT much nicer?

I heard from other people that Trader Joes has all kinds of really cool stuff and good prices. Whole foods is a nice store too if you are a health nut! They are expensive though and will cost you a pretty penny. I also like Stop-n-Shop or Hannafords. The cheapest of all is Market Basket where you can get alot of food for a small price!!!

Trader Joe's, by a mile. They're not so pretentious, but they have great food.

Never heard of either. My favorite around here is Publix. In North Carolina is Food Lion.
