oh this is great! i had to do a paper on this las year...
The European Union is a group of countries that include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the newer few, which are Cyprus (Greek Part), Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia (total of 25). The largest member country is Germany, and the smallest is Malta. The original members were Luxembourg, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy. The European Union was previously called the European Community.
The motto of the European Union is “In varietate concordia”. Translated to English, this means “Unity in diversity”. The anthem of the European Union is “Ode to Joy”, composed by Ludwig Van Beethoven. It has been the anthem of the European Union since 1986. The flag of the European Union is a circle of yellow stars in front of a blue background (shown bellow).
The currency of the members of the European Union is the euro, although not all of the members use the euro. Only the Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain use the euro s their currency. Each country has a different symbol on each of the currency. On the coins, the back side, there is what seems like a patriotic symbol. For example, on the back side of the one (and two) Euro coins from France, there is a tree, but in the one Euro coins from Finland, there is a flower. They differ between every country, from the picture, size and shape, to the color, texture, weight and composition. The Euro was introduced to financial markets worldwide in 1999, and in 2002, it was introduced as the currency in 2002. (There are several more images on the back few pages.) These images probably represent an important person, place or idea to the country, and there are many different symbols, so there might be several things of great importance to the country.
The headquarters for the European Union is located in Brussels, Belgium. This place was chosen to be the headquarters for the European Union because of its centralized location in Europe.
The activities of the European Union include areas of public policy, health and economic policy, foreign affairs and defense (the amount of power differs between different areas). The European Union has to work as a group to legislate laws, manage commission and budget authority.
The European Union has an important role in everyday life. It grows almost every year, creating a larger Union to help the European community.
