Boarding Schools are fantastic but are not for everyone. The advantages are:
-sense of community
-opportunity to develop friendships
-academic environment conducive to good study
-sports programmes
-outdoor activities
-alumni network - continuing community after school
But you're away from family and there are drawbacks.

I imagine the advantages are that a person/student...
... learns to be independent at an early(ier) age
... can get a solid education (depending on the school itself and what the student makes of it)
... is monitored fairly closely re: studying, drugs, etc. (again, depends on the school)
Without knowing more about the situation or your perspective on things, it's a little difficult to say more..
