According to conflict theorists, social problems like social inequlity and stratification occur becuse the haves in society struggle to maintain their advantageous position. This means people in power want to remain powerful and the only way to do that is eliminate competition so they "tread on those below them" so that they never become a threat.
That's why the richest one percent of the population frown at tax increments. They don't want to have to loose anythingto the have nots, they just want more so they can stay at the top. Trust me, if you were them you'll do the same.

It isn't only people who have power or privilege. I was a taxi driver for 15 years and you would be amazed the number of "ordinary" people who made their minds up that taxi drivers are the scum of the earth and beneath them. I never argued, I smiled to myself and laughed all the way to the bank.

You really do not understand power, do you? How do you know that you have power over someone? You make them suffer. If they are not suffering, they could just be going along with you and then you would not have power over them. You need to read "1984 " by George Orwell. A most unrecognized, underrated philosopher.

People are animals, too. In the animal kingdom there's a food chain and a power hierarchy. Some are lions, others are worker ants and parasites.

If you give anyone a certain amount of power, their ego increases. Some people just thrive on control.

it increases their ego..I think some people do it just because they can...they forget that they at one time were in the "inferior" category and someone is above them..they forget that someone is still above them and don't think about how they would appreciate it if they were treated that way by those people

Some people have to demean other people in order to feel like they are superior.
My sociology professor told us that "everyone needs someone to p*ss on"
