If the DA still believes the person did the crime, they will still go ahead with the charges. If the person is found guilty, part of the sentence will be for time served, however long that was.
The conviction will stay on the record.

No its not about time served..... a person has been charged and that goes on the record. Far worse than time in jail as it will follow you forever. I kind of see where you are going but it doesn't work the way you are thinking.

NO that is not how it works, you stay in jail till the trial, after you are found not guilty, the judge can ( but does not have to) let you out on time served.
Sorry but you dont get free with charges droped.

we are so stupid. anybody facing a judge should say "Lock Me Up Your Honor". They won't do it because there is not enough room now in prisons for serious crimes. So what would all the judges do? They would be instructed to release everybody. I can';t wait for this stupid nation to send the major criminals to Turkey for $3. a day apiece. We were made that offer back in the eighties. The U.S. gov't turned them down, why?

No, they'd be found guilty, and sentenced to "time served", meaning they would be set free - but they still have a record.

Depends on the charge. If it is not a felony, it can be but you will have to get a good attorney that will not just take you for all he can. That is what an attorney told me so take it for what it is worth.
