Here's my story.

I tried everything to quit smoking and I mean EVERYTHING! I was so addicted I smoked in the shower. That's the truth.

Even though I was seeing my doctor every month to try to quit smoking, he totally missed for 1 WHOLE YEAR my throat cancer. By then it was too late and I ended up losing my larynx. I still consider myself very fortunate as I came within a half hour of losing my life and those are the surgeon's words not mine.

I now breathe through a hole in my neck. It changed my life totally. There are so many things in life that are now forever closed off to me because of it. If I could go back and tell myself the outcome of smoking cigarettes would have on my life I would have never started.

Yeah, it's hard to quit. They have shown because of the chemicals they add to cigarettes (did you know they actually add urine to them?), that they are harder to quit than heroin. But you know after 10 days of intensive care after having my throat slit ear-to-ear to take out the cancer I found it wasn't so hard not to pick up another cigarette.

As it is now, I have emphysema and it will probably be the thing that kills me barring an accident. My body will get to the point where even with medical help it will not be able to get rid of the fluid buildup in my lungs and around my heart. I will either drown in my own fluids or my heart will stop under the strain. It will not be a quick death but it will be like slowly being strangled to death. It's called air hunger. No matter what you do, you can't get enough air even with oxygen being put directly into you.

So is cigarette smoking worth it? Absolutely not. It kills you. It makes you stink. It gives you yellow teeth. It makes your skin wrinkle especially around your mouth and eyes. It raises your insurance rates. It makes your house stink and everything in it yellow. It makes you cough up phlegm which is another word for pus. It cost you a lot of money that you could be using for many other things. It makes you an unwelcome guest in many people's homes. It makes you more suseptible to colds and other illnesses. AND when you have lung inflammation, they give you prednisone and the number one side effect of prednisone is weight gain. (Think Jerry Lewis. That's what happened to him.)

Give them up.

There is a new pill out there, I'm sorry but I do not know the name . . . google "stop smoking pill", I'm sure that'll bring it up. The thing works awesome. My boss was a heavy smoker, she got a prescription for the stuff and doesn't crave the nicotine at all any longer. The drug works by blocking the pleasure and craving for nicotine This is NOT an anti-depressant drug. The side-affects are minimal to nil. He has to quit, he's not enjoying that crap as much as he thinks he is . . . good luck to the both of you.

Cigarettes are bad for you and smoking weed is bad too. if you still want to get high but don't want to smoke, get yourself a vaporizer and have fun. If you quit smoking tobacco, you'll live longer. If you quit smoking weed, you'll live longer but you might not enjoy it as much.

Tell him about all the health defects smoking brings. Wrinkling skin, bad breath, rotting teeth, lung cancer, etc. That might make him realize how bad smoking is. I don't think his girlfriend would like a man with THOSE traits!

Try to show him the benefits of not smoking - reduced risk of lung cancer, emphysema, etc. Also, provide him an alternative to smoking such as chewing nicorette gum or listening to music, etc. Try not to tell him to eat something when he feels like smoking. I hear that people gain weight that way.

If you can somehow get him to smoke far past his limit in a very short period of time, he will become so sick that the mere idea of smoking another cigarette becomes incomprehensible

I have been trying to get my husband to quit for 5 years and if they are not ready to quit it is like beating your head against the wall. Kind of like trying to get an alcoholic to quit drinking. They have to make the choice to quit. We can't do it for them.
